Setting up digital tipping for your team allows customers to easily tip either an individual employee by name or the entire crew. Tip Jar is designed to remove common 'tipping friction' points, making it simpler for willing customers to show appreciation.
Whole-Crew Tipping
Customers often want to tip the team that served them, even if they don't know everyone's name. Tip Jar offers whole-crew tipping, which means a customer can tip the entire crew instead of picking a single person, when that option is turned on for your jar. Guests can also send a tip to one named person if they prefer, and the money routes to whoever was chosen.
This helps address the 'identity friction' where a customer isn't sure who they're actually tipping, and it can also solve 'timing friction' if the moment to tip a specific person has passed.
How it Works for Your Team
Creating a Tip Jar takes about two minutes and doesn't require a website. Once set up, your team's Tip Jar can be shared as a link, a printed QR code, an email signature link, or embedded on your own website. Customers don't download an app or create an account; they open a page, pick an amount (the smallest Tip Jar accepts is $5), and pay by card or digital wallet.
Payments and payouts run on Stripe, and money lands in the recipient's own bank account. Tip Jar keeps a 3% platform fee, taken out of the tip itself.
Getting Everyone Onboard
Team members can appear on a Tip Jar and be chosen by customers even before they've finished setting up their own payouts. In the meantime, tips credited to them route to the business and remain attributed to them. This helps ensure that no tip is lost while individuals get their personal payout details sorted.
'Who am I tipping?' is a different question from 'how do I pay?'. A good digital tip jar should feel like part of the experience, not another checkout. A generic payment link can collect money, but a Tip Jar is designed to create a tipping moment, reducing common 'tipping friction' points like discovery, payment, identity, amount, timing, social, technology, and trust friction.
Goodbyes are often short, and hands are usually full. If the only tipping option lives at the exit, many grateful customers might walk straight past it. Placing your Tip Jar where the thank-you happens helps ensure those moments aren't missed.
